Tariffs and trade: a US perspective

There is an active debate about the outcome of the US elections for US trade policies. Two factors that are sometimes used to motivate for trade actions are whether a country imposes import tariffs on the US and whether they run large bilateral trade surpluses with the US. Today’s post shows that among major economies, many countries have import tariffs that are far in excess of the US level and large bilateral goods trade surpluses.
