South Africa’s bilateral trade balances

Today’s post by Jan Smuts shows that South Africa’s bilateral trade surpluses have improved in 2024 with Mozambique, the UK, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and Japan improved compared to earlier periods, such as 2000. South Africa’s trade deficit with China, however, has widened. Note that our large surplus with Mozambique’s reflects mineral exports transshipped to other countries, particularly China, which are not matched by imports.
