South African tax expenditures

South Africa spends almost 5% of GDP (around 20% of tax revenue) on tax expenditures. Tax expenditures include things like tax incentives for firms, tax deductibility for saving by households, or tax relief on certain consumer goods. The support to pension contributions from employers and the motor vehicle industry, for example, each amount to around R35 billion per year.
