Today’s post by Jan Smuts shows that South African exports out of ports such as Durban and Cape Town have risen since the pandemic. Exports out of other ports, such as Richard’s Bay and East London rose strongly for a time, but have declined recently. Note that these data are not adjusted for inflation or higher commodity prices. As we have shown in earlier posts, mining exports from South Africa have declined strongly since their 2022 peak, reflecting, amongst other things, a decline in export prices.
