Updated estimates from Statistics South Africa suggest that despite an upward revision to provincial GDP estimates, per capita GDP has only risen in one province since 2013: the Eastern Cape. It is worth noting that the Eastern Cape is estimated to have had a declining population since 2021, which is expected to continue. South Africa is one of only a small number of large economies that have experienced a decline in GDP per capita since 2010. South Africa is one of the few large economies globally that the IMF predicts will have further declines in per capita income.
