Estimates from Sw7 suggest that informal businesses represent 50% of all businesses in South Africa. Businesses with under 1 million rand revenue represent over 95% of businesses according to these estimates. At around 3.2 million, these estimates are slightly below SARS estimates that show that there are around 4 million registered companies in South Africa (with only around a million expected to submit tax returns).
