Income tax share of the top 1% of earners in SA

Today’s post by Aidan Horn shows that according to the SARS administrative tax panel, the top 1% of earners capture roughly 11% of all before-tax income paid in the formal economy, earning on average over R180 000 per month in 2025. Note that the proportion taken by the top 1% would be greater if we include the population of people receiving a social grant.
