Today’s plot by Tristan Hoyle shows night light developments for selected urban centers and one special economic zone. Sandton Central in Johannesburg, Menlyn in Pretoria, and Durban Central in Kwa‐Zulu Natal all saw declines in mean night lights between 2012 and late 2024. There are also large level differences between wards. For example, the Cape Town
City bowl emits much more night light than Kempton Park.
