What did SA’s pandemic alcohol ban mean for crime and mortality?

A recent Review of Economics and Statistics paper assesses the impact of SA’s nationwide alcohol sales ban in during the COVID-19 pandemic and finds that it led to at least 14% lower mortality from unnatural causes and a sharp decline in homicide, assault and reported rape. The paper demonstrates the role that alcohol can play in aggressive behaviour in society.
