The Netherlands remains South Africa’s largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) partner, representing over 25% of SA’s total outward investments, according to the IMF. The UK is the biggest inward partner for South Africa, representing slightly less than 25% of total inward positions.
As we have shown previously, there are meaningful asymmetries in the bilateral FDI statistics published by the IMF. The second chart shows that the mirror data for South Africa paints a completely different picture about bilateral FDI positions.
