Poaching has decimated South Africa’s rhino population. We estimate that over 10000 rhinos have been poached since 2004. Available estimates show that the Kruger National Park’s rhino population has declined by over 75% for white rhinos since 2011 and over 50% for black rhino since 2013. In response to more than 300 rhinos poached in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in 2023, KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial conservation agency has started a dehorning programme.
