Among South African provinces we estimate that Gauteng and North West have experienced a decline in GDP per capita since 2002, while it has risen most strongly in the Eastern Cape. It is worth noting that the Eastern Cape has experienced relatively low population growth compared to other provinces over this period on account of out migration to other provinces.
