In today’s post, we aggregate municipal data to compare how maintenance and repair spending compares to the asset base of each province. South African municipalities are spending very little on maintaining their infrastructure. The latest comprehensive municipal data from the National Treasury show that no province spent more than 2% of the value of assets on maintenance and repair in 2019. The spike for KwaZulu-Natal for 2011 reflects the impact of flooding on Msunduzi Municipality.
