How do earnings vary by educational attainment and formal vs informal sector employment?

Today’s post by Aidan Horn shows earnings for those who have been educated at least to matric are substantially higher than earnings for those who have not. Education has a bigger effect on wages for those who are formally employed, both in absolute and relative terms, compared to those who are informally employed.

In 2022, half of our employed population earned less than R5060 per month (in Dec 2024 rands), which should serve as a reminder of South Africa’s low income levels.
