GDP deflator vs CPI during COVID

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a meaningful divergence between the GDP deflator (which measures inflation of all domestic goods and services produced in a particular year) and and CPI (which measures inflation of a fixed basket of consumer goods and services, including imports). One reason the CPI may understate inflation during a pandemic because it does not capture changes in spending patterns.
