Today’s post summarises the composition of net financial flows in South Africa. South Africa has continued to attract enough foreign capital to cover its current account deficit. However, there has been a large net outflow of portfolio capital since 2020. Historically, this category has represented the bulk of the financing of the current account. The large outflow of portfolio capital in 2020 was offset by positive net
foreign direct investment inflows.
