EconData makes historical CPI weights back to 1970 available on the website, in excel, R or Python. Today’s post shows that there has been a significant increase in the CPI weight for insurance in the consumer price basket in the 2008–2019 weights regime. Initially a relatively small individual component of the goods basket, insurance now represents almost a tenth of the CPI basket. In part, this reflects a reclassification of health and transport insurance from Health and Transport in the pre-2008 weights regime. In the second regime, all insurance items were reclassified under Miscellaneous Goods and Services.
