Changes in CPI weights in SA

Today’s post summarises changes in subclass weights for the consumer price index for South Africa as recently published by Statistics South Africa. The biggest change was in restaurants and accommodation services, which saw its weight in the headline index increase from 3.2% to 6.1%. Other large increases in weights include those for information and communication, with the inclusion of products such as modems and routers and streaming services. The weight of owners’ equivalent rent has been reduced from 13% to 11.2%, domestic services (domestic worker wages) from 2.5% to 1.5% and health insurances from 7.1% to 6.2%.

Historical CPI weights dating back to 1970 are available on our EconData platform for enterprise subscribers. To our knowledge, EconData is the only source offering these historical weights for easy download in Excel, R, or Python.
