Potential growth decomposition for SA

In our new Policy Paper, we provide estimates of historical South African potential growth based on constant elasticity of substitution production functions. Labour supply and the capital stock have been the main drivers of the economy’s underlying potential growth. A time-varying factor augmenting specification suggests that the fall in potential growth has also reflected the pressure on South Africa’s capital stock and a decline in efficiency with which capital is used.
