Today’s plot by Aidan Horn shows that there is meaningful seasonality in night light intensity in South Africa. Lights are used most at night-time from August to October in South Africa as a whole, with less usage from March to June. The plot shows evidence of reduced night light intensity during load shedding, with an increase in night lights since 2023. The data are sourced from NASA’s Black Marble API, which uses the VIIRS satellite sensors.
