Treasury’s figures show that the number of taxpayers are risen by over a million over the last decade, to over 7.5 million expected in 2025/26. These figures are higher than SARS figures, although it is difficult to precisely compare on account of differences in available income brackets published from different sources. We show that South Africa has slightly more than 5.5 million taxpayers above the tax free threshold, over a million of those are government employees.
