The real value of intangible capital (things such as intellectual property, brand value or data) has largely kept pace with the value of tangible capital in South Africa. But the latest available data from Statistics South Africa suggests that the real value of tangible and intangible capital has been fairly flat since 2005. This is a concern because the capital stock is a key driver of productivity growth and therefore long-term per capita income.
