Steel production in SA

South Africa is ranked around 28th globally for steel production, having seen declining production since the mid 2000s. Capacity utilisation has also declined over time: most recently, the steel industry was operating at 63% of capacity. By comparison, China’s capacity has increased sevenfold since 2000, Iran’s has increased almost sixfold, India more than threefold and Turkey’s production has almost doubled.
