South Africa’s pension fund industry has been ranked 7th globally in terms of performance disclosures and 12th on costs. The five funds reviewed (including the government employees pension fund, ESKOM’s and three defined contribution funds that compete for employer and individual members) performed well in terms of total fund performance disclosures and total fund cost disclosures and the completeness of external management fees. South African funds scored less well globally in terms of risk disclosures and asset class level costs and transaction costs.
