China and the USA are responsible for the majority of patent and trademark applications globally. But when controlling for size of population, it is South Korea that produced the highest relative number of patent applications and the Netherlands that produced the highest relative number of trademark applications in 2020. Among BRICS economies, South Africa’s level of trademark and patent applications per capita in 2020 was only higher than India’s.
