There has been a decrease in the number of police officers in South Africa relative to the population. The number of criminal incidents relative to our population size had been declining before spiking in 2021/22. South Africa’s prosecution rates for serious crimes are very low if expressed relative to the actual number of reported crimes instead of the number of cases brought to trial.
