Residential and non-residential construction activity has declined substantially in South Africa compared to earlier decades. Construction activity has been particularly weak given South Africa’s strong population growth. The square meters of non-residential building plans passed/completed in 2023 were 46%/37% lower than in 1994 when adjusted for the size of the population, while the square meters of residential building plans passed/completed were down 48%/44% in 2023.
