Banana yields have gone bananas

The yields of banana farmers in South Africa have increased strongly over the last decade, as they have in other banana producing economies. This reflects increased use of fertilizers, increases in planting density and other improvements in planting practices.

In South Africa, the increase in yield has coincided with a significant decline in the total land planted since the area planted peaked in the early 2000s.
