By global standards, South Africa scores poorly in terms of availability and governance for data for the public good. A global comparison by the Global Data Barometer shows that though South Africa is comparatively strong at provision of budget and public finance data and data protection regulation, the country is far behind global best practice with respect to public availability of data overall or frameworks and regulations for data sharing.
