Withdrawal of capital by non-residents from South Africa has seen South Africa’s direct and portfolio foreign liabilities decline over recent years. South Africa’s foreign direct investment assets also declined, leading to a fall in our overall net foreign asset position in direct foreign assets, while portfolio foreign liabilities have been rising relative to GDP.
