Since the rand values of fuel taxes, levies and margins are set periodically by government, their proportional contributions to the retail fuel price vary with changes in the basic fuel price. Recently, a temporary reduction in the fuel levy saw the contribution from taxes and levies fall to 21%, after averaging over 30% since 2010.
