Developments in labour productivity, labour share and wages in SA

South Africa’s GDP per capita, a simple measure of labour productivity and relative income, has fallen since 2017. The real value of average compensation rose between 2008 and 2021, but has fallen sharply since. The share of labour in total income has also declined since 2021. This posts shows that there are some surprising differences between the productivity and labour cost estimates from Stats SA and the World Bank.
