Iron and steel production is very energy-intensive and contributes around 25% of global industrial CO2 emissions according to the IEA. According to estimates from 2019, ArcelorMittal is the largest emitter among iron and steel producers in South Africa, although South African producer emissions are much lower than those from major producers in China, Russia, Japan and India.
