Smoking rates and affordability

South Africa has a relatively high smoking rate compared to major economies. A pack of cigarettes is relatively cheap by global standards at around USD2.60, compared to USD22 in Australia or USD13.50 in the UK, according to the WHO (most sold brand, 2020). But cigarette prices are relatively high when expressed compared to our average level of income.
