Today’s post by Aidan Horn shows that South Africa exports little to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). A couple of SACU related data points worth mentioning:
- SACU transfers have represented a transfer of almost 5% of South Africa’s total government revenue.
- Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia receive a large proportion of their total government revenue from transfers from the SACU. Since 2010, for example, Eswatini and Lesotho have received almost 40% of their total government revenue from SACU.
- Botswana receives 10 times more SACU revenues per capita than South Africa at almost R14 000 per capita.
- For recipient countries, transfers are close to four times more than what might be considered fair’ and for Eswatini ‘this may be more than six times the estimate of fair compensation’.
