In today’s post, we show a measure of ward-level economic activity in South Africa that incorporates a range of timely indicators, including a range of measures of retail activity and consumer spending confidence, night lights, and infrastructure development. South Africa’s spatial inequality is clearly visible, with urban areas tending to have higher levels of economic activity and more developed infrastructure.
