Cross-country estimates from the World Travel & Tourism Council suggest that the total contribution (i.e direct and indirect impacts) of tourism to GDP was relatively high in South Africa pre-COVID, at about 9 percent. The direct contribution of international tourism to GDP alone was about 2.5 percent, comparable of the direct contributions in countries such as France and Italy.
