In today’s post we show a measure of food insecurity by ward based on retail data. Food insecurity is measured by looking at how consumers’ spending on specific items change as prices and their expenditure changes. We showed in an earlier post that our most recent estimates and StatSA’s food poverty estimates are broadly aligned at provincial level. While not strictly comparable, these estimates suggest meaningful differences in spatial food security, with many rural and informal settlements experiencing especially high levels of food insecurity.
