Decline in listed companies in most economies

Since 2000, the number of listed companies has halved in South Africa. The number of listed companies has also declined meaningfully in major economies like the USA. This reflects the rise of private equity and mergers between existing companies, fewer companies launching on public markets, and historically low interest rates which have created a preference for debt financing instead of equity financing. But there have been exceptions, including India, China, Canada and Australia.
