According to the World Bank, Uruguay has the world’s highest carbon tax. South Africa’s carbon tax is about 9 USD per metric ton of CO2 equivalent and our scheme is intended to eventually cover 90% of our emissions, which represents slightly less than 1% of global emission. Once transition phase of the carbon tax ends in 2025, the carbon tax is expected to double to around USD20 per ton by 2026, and then progressively rise thereafter to USD30 per tone by 2030 and USD120 after 2050.
